The reason I’m asking this question is because, over the weekend, I was giving a ride to one of my friends whose car had broken down. I’ve been friends with her for years but never thought that the relationship would go beyond the “friend” stage due to the fact that she’s Catholic and has made it known that she plans to remain celibate until her wedding night. Since I’ve always believed that a guy and girl in a committed relationship should be able to have some safe fun prior to their wedding, I’ve just never believed that a relationship with her would work out.
This weekend however, things began to get interesting as I was driving her home. When we got to her apartment, she invited me in and I merely figured that she had decided to abandon her vow of celibacy. However, as we started taking off each others cloths, she reached in her draw, pulled out a condom, and told me that she wanted me to wear it because she wanted to remain “celibate” (I actually intended to wear protection anyway).

By this definition, I guess I’m still a virgin as pure as new-fallen snow…

Apparently, she only considers “sex” to be unprotected sex and was interested in doing these other things with me the entire time.

We spent a really enjoyable evening together (and I learned that I wasn’t the first guy who she’s had not-sex with).
Since there are a lot of Catholics in my area, it would be advantageous for me to find a way to quickly determine which of these girls define “sex” the way I did, namely as any form of hanky-panky between a guy and a girl, and which girls use my girlfriends much broader definition.

How can I quickly make this determination???

These days having unprotected casual sex can be dangerous. It has always been in the past. Rumor has it that Henry VIII died from complications from a sexually transmitted disease, and these days, the prevalence of HIV and AIDS have even complicated matters. Though admittedly, the rewards of sex are more fulfilling and sensual than ever. Proof of this lies in the increase of adult film videos into a billion dollar industry. More and more kids are becoming sexually active at an early age. Perhaps it is due to the exposure of sexually implicit content in the mass media and internet these days. The era of conservatism when it comes to sex has dwindled, perhaps disappeared. And though information about safe sex and protected sex is readily available in the industrialized countries, there are some countries that are ignorant or uninformed of that matter. There are even certain countries in Africa where wearing a condom is frowned upon by the males. Still, we have to try and inform and educate people about using condoms at the very least.

A lesser but still painful risk from having unprotected and casual sex with many partners is having genital warts. These warts, known as HPV or human papiloma virus and there are more than 100 different subtypes of HPV but the result are that there are these huge warts that are located in one’s genital area whether it be on the genitals themselves or in its surroundings. Highly contagious especially if rubbed from one skin to another, one can cure genital warts using the following methods:

- Using Podphylin resin which is a brown liquid painted on the wart. Similar to betadine or iodone, this resin stops the cell growth of genital warts and the process may be done on several occasions. This treatment should be done by a medical professional since applying it to healthy tissues around the wart may damage the healthy ones as well.

- Using Podopfilox lotion or gel. This follows the same procedure of podphylin resin. The average treatment for this is to use twice daily for three days and then abstain from using it for four days, Average length of the treatment is a month or so.

- Surgical Excision. A procedure is performed by the doctor to remove the wart.

- Laser. This utilizes an intense beam of light aimed at the wart to burn and remove it.

- Electrocautery. Similar to laser treatment, this cauterization is the earlier form wherein the patient is subjected to cauterization of the wart through a current passing through a super hot needle

- Liquid nitrogen treatment. Also called cryotherapy, this is a freezing treatment for warts.

The head louse, Pediculus capitis humanus, is by no means a new nuisance. The insect has been an unwelcome companion to humans, probably from the beginning, as with its close relatives, the body louse and the pubic (or crab) louse. Head lice infestations seem to be on the rise in recent years – as almost any parent of an elementry-age child can tell you.

A parent’s first reaction to head lice is often revulsion, sometimes accompanied by a sense of shame, due to the misperception that head lice only live on “dirty” people. In truth, the only thing that the presence of head lice tells about children is that they’ve been around other kids with head lice.

Head lice (Pediculus capitis) affects only humans, and cannot be passed on to, or caught from animals. Infestation with head lice is also known as pediculosis.

Head lice are tiny (pin-head sized) grey-brown, wingless insects, which live by sucking blood from the scalp. Their eggs are known as nits and they are laid glued to the base of hairs, and look like tiny white specks.

How are head lice spread?
Anyone can get head lice. Having head lice does not mean a person is unclean.
Head lice are commonly spread among children and adults who may stay close together in one place, such as in child care settings and schools. Head lice cannot jump or fly from one person to another.
Although less likely, head lice can also be spread by children sharing hats, combs, hairbrushes or headphones.

Can head lice be prevented?
It may be difficult to prevent head lice from spreading among children, but the following are some steps you can take to help keep lice away:
·    Ask your child not to share combs, brushes or hair decorations.
·    Ask your child not to try on hats that belong to other children.
·    If your child will be sleeping away from home, be sure to pack his or her own pillow and towels.
What are the symptoms?
Some people have no symptoms, or may not notice the lice or eggs, so you may not know whether you or a partner has pubic lice. It can take several weeks after coming into contact with pubic lice before any symptoms appear.

You might notice:
·    Itching in the affected areas
·    Black powdery droppings from the lice in underwear
·    Brown eggs on pubic or other body hair
·    Irritation and inflammation in the affected area, sometimes caused by scratching
·    Sky-blue dots (which disappear within a few days) or very tiny specks of blood on the skin

Treatment
Firstly, don’t panic! Most times you can make the diagnosis and start the treatment yourself, but if in doubt, or if the lice seem resistant to treatment, consult the pharmacist, nurse (attached to the school or the doctor’s surgery), health visitor or doctor.
There are various proprietary, active treatments available, and so-called “bug-busting”.

The chemical treatments fall into a number of groups:
·    Pyrethrins
·    Synthetic pyrethroids (permethrin and phenothrin)
·    Organophosphates (malathion)
·    Carbamates (carbaryl)
·    Herbal
